All throughout February, we celebrated Black History Month at Norwescap by sharing stories of Black heroes who helped to shape our country; hosting virtual events celebrating Black culture; and opening up dialogues with our staff and community members about the barriers experienced by Black Americans today. Addressing racial disparities has always been at the heart of Norwescap’s work, because we know that in America the challenges of racism and poverty are inextricably linked. Honoring Black History Month is one small measure we undertake to make sure Norwescap is keeping our mission close to our hearts and embedded in our daily work – work that must continue every day of the year.
In this first week of March, we are excited to celebrate Read Across America with the families who are part of our Head Start, Early Head Start, and other child- and family-focused programs, as well as all of you! We’ll be joined by a group of Norwescap friends including award-winning children’s author/illustrator R. Gregory Christie, who recently spoke with our Norwescap staff about his creative process, important influences in his work, and the critical role that childhood literacy plays in learning and emotional development. Our other Read Across America guests will include Senator Cory Booker, First Lady Tammy Murphy, Phillipsburg Chief of Police Robert Stettner, and two-time Superbowl champ Lee Rouson, sharing their favorite books for kids of all ages to enjoy.
Join us on Facebook or YouTube to read along!
