Celebrating National Volunteer Month

April is a very special month at Norwescap, and for many nonprofits around the country – it’s National Volunteer Month! This month recognizes the support, dedication, commitment, and value volunteers bring to organizations like Norwescap and many others.

National Volunteer Month was created in 1989 as a federal initiative to encourage millions of people to take action and change the world. April quickly became a month dedicated to recognizing the importance of volunteering and honoring the significant contributions volunteers make by generously donating their time and talents to worthy causes. Without volunteers donating their time and passion to the causes they care about, much of our work would never be possible. From sorting food at the Food Bank, to cleaning and beautifying our communities, to preparing taxes – our volunteers truly make things happen at Norwescap! From

Approximately 63 million Americans — 25% of the adult population — volunteer their time, talents, and energy to making a difference. Volunteering not only helps build safer and stronger communities, contributes to the economy, and promotes civic engagement – it also helps YOU.

Being a volunteer can provide a sense of fulfillment, purpose, and improve your overall well-being in the process. Volunteering increases feelings of happiness by bringing a deep sense of joy for helping families, individuals and organizations achieve their goals and being a part of the bigger picture. According to a “National Today” article, 96% of volunteers believe that volunteering makes them a happier person.

The act of volunteering demonstrates that

…no matter who you are, where you live, or how much
you earn, you can pull someone up the ladder behind you.

Acting as a helping hand to others provides a sense of higher purpose to one’s life. Volunteering is a sure way to see the direct impact your work, time, and efforts have on another person’s life.

In addition to enhancing well-being, volunteering can also lead to better job opportunities and can connect you with individuals that will inspire or help you reach higher levels in your own life. Take Norwescap’s very own Carrie Stepney and Gladys Maldonado from The Traditions Family Success Center. Both women started out as parent volunteers for FSC and CFRS. After volunteering, making connections with Norwescap staff, and building deep relationships within the local community, they were both offered full-time positions with Norwescap!

At Norwescap, we believe you should strive to be the change you want to be in the world. By leading with this mindset, we not only change ourselves, but we inspire change in others. Volunteering strengthens character, creates positive change, and provides a deep sense of fulfillment and empathy. Volunteers are truly a gift to society and community, and we are grateful to each and every person who volunteers their time with Norwescap!
