Job Title: Housing Specialist
Affordable housing is hard to find in New Jersey, and each year many people find themselves at risk of losing their place of residence. Norwescap’s Housing Support Department helps individuals and families across the spectrum from homelessness services to eviction prevention to homeownership. The Housing Specialist provides direct case management services to these families identifying needs, connecting to available services, and monitoring progress toward thriving over time.
Specific Responsibilities:
The Housing Specialist will:
• assess participant needs and program eligibility, connecting them to internal and external resources
• provide individual and/or group housing counseling sessions including eviction prevention, foreclosure prevention, homeownership preparation, and more
• assist participants in the completion of applications and declaration forms upon which eligibility decisions are based, collecting information on gross earnings, financial obligations, parental status, disability status, and living arrangements
• provide on-going case management services and support to participants, including referral to eligible housing and other related services (e.g. food, childcare, employment)
• establish and maintain program participant files and create program goals for each participant
• document work in HMIS and empowOR databases
• process payments for rent and maintain a professional relationship with partner landlords
• participate and/or serve on standing housing meetings, Continuum of Care (CoC) Meetings, Data Quality and Case Conferencing meetings
• maintain knowledge of housing resources in region to make effective referrals
• attend Norwescap domain and department meetings
Required Qualifications:
• Passion for helping individuals and families experiencing housing difficulties
• Experience providing case management services to support individuals and families in finding housing and/or related services.
• Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively
• Effective interpersonal and professional communication
• Ability to read and understand complex regulations and procedures
• Skills in use of computer applications including Microsoft Office and database systems
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to communicate with persons from a variety of social, cultural, and economic backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications:
• HUD Housing Counselor certification
• Bilingual (Spanish) preferred
