It’s not too early to think about tax time -Free Income Tax preparation assistance

For more than 30 years, Skylands RSVP of NORWESCAP has been offering free Federal and State Income Tax preparation through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Volunteers, who are certified by the Internal Revenue Service, will be available for free tax preparation at sites throughout Morris, Sussex, Warren and Hunterdon Counties from February 1 through April 15, 2012.  VITA site schedules include daytime, evening and weekend hours.

The FREE income tax assistance is available for those with uncomplicated returns- including the elderly, people with disabilities, and income eligible people. Spanish speaking volunteers can assist at some of the sites. Electronic filing is available at the sites.

Taxpayers seeking assistance are required to bring the following documents:

  • Proof of identification
  • Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents and/or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Current year’s tax package if you received one
  • Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
  • Bank routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit
  • Total paid for daycare provider and daycare provider’s tax identifying number
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
